Mid Worcestershire MP Nigel Huddleston has welcomed the announcement that the next major worldwide climate conference, COP26, is to be held in Glasgow in 2020.
In the run up to the announcement Mr Huddleston had asked local residents to sign and support his petition which called for the 2020 Global Climate Change Summit to be hosted by a UK city. He then joined other MPs in the House of Commons to present a petition signed by thousands of constituents calling for the UK to host the prestigious conference.
COP26 will be the most important climate change conference since the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris, at which 125 nations signed an agreement to cut carbon dioxide emissions, a large contributor to climate change. The conference intends to build on the Paris accords and present clear plans to tackle climate change.
Following the confirmation, Mr Huddleston said: “This announcement continues to demonstrate that the UK is a global leader in tackling climate change and keeping it at the top of the agenda. It also builds on the progress the Government has made in recent years on this important issue – not least enshrining in law the legally-binding commitment to end our contribution to climate change altogether by 2050.”
He added: “I want to thank everybody who signed the petition and supported this campaign, which highlights just how important this issue is to my constituents.”
