New figures show that Mid Worcestershire – the area of Wychavon including Hartlebury, Droitwich, Evesham nd Broadway – one of the lowest rates of employment in the UK. The news that has been welcomed by the constituency’s MP, Sir Peter Luff.
The number of people in the area claiming Jobseeker's Allowance in September 2014 was 674, which is 20 people lower than in August 2014 and 345 lower than in September 2013. This puts Mid Worcestershire at the 510th highest of the 650 UK constituencies (where 1st is the highest rate of unemployment and 650th is lowest rate of unemployment.)
Other figures released today show that over the last year across the country unemployment has had its largest annual fall since records began. It is the first time that unemployment has been below 2 million since 2008.
Commenting on this news Sir Peter said,
“This is great news for my constituency and is, in significant part, down to the excellent work of the local councils who have helped to create the right conditions for businesses to flourish in this area.
“But it is also fantastic news for the rest of the country and for all of the people who now have the security of work.
“These strong jobs numbers show that the Government’s long-term economic plan is working, building a stronger, healthier economy, and getting our country closer towards full employment.
“Although families are still feeling the effects of the recession, this largest annual fall in unemployment ever recorded is a brilliant step forward and means that more people are taking home a pay packet than any time since 2008.
“The only way to continue this trend and to raise living standards is to stick to the plan which is getting people off welfare and into work.”
