In his Maiden Speech in the House of Commons, newly elected Member of Parliament Nigel Huddleston, described Mid Worcestershire, as one of the most idyllic constituencies in the country.
Every Member of Parliament must give what is known as a Maiden Speech in Parliament before they are able to participate in other debates and ask ministers questions in the House of Commons.
In his speech Nigel said,
“I am fortunate to represent one of the most idyllic constituencies in the country. A drive through Mid Worcestershire is a wonderful experience, starting from Broadway—the gateway to the Cotswolds—in the south, and heading through the gently undulating landscape of the Vale of Evesham, past fields of asparagus, plum and apple orchards, and greenhouses full of fragrant and beautiful flowers.
“One continues north, passing the Worcester Warriors rugby stadium, towards the historic town of Droitwich Spa and on to Ombersley and Hartlebury in the north. On the journey one will pass through many quintessentially English villages with splendid names, such as Upton Snodsbury, Flyford Flavell and my children’s favourite—Wyre Piddle.”
Nigel also praised his predecessor, former MP for the area, Sir Peter Luff, for the work that he had done in the constituency.
He said,
“(Sir Peter) fought for significant improvements to local infrastructure, including the new Worcestershire Parkway station which will open in 2017. He also worked hard to preserve and restore local heritage assets such as Hartlebury Castle, the Droitwich canals and the Regal Cinema. I will try to serve the kind and generous constituents of Mid Worcestershire as well as Peter did.”
As well as the championing the constituency in Parliament, Nigel also set out some of his key interest areas. After working for a leading technology company, Nigel wishes to be an advocate for technology and the digital sector, as well as for the travel and tourism sector – a sector that employs many people in Worcestershire.
After the debate Nigel commented,
“Giving my maiden speech was a nerve racking but exciting experience. Just thinking about all the famous statesmen and women who have previously spoken in the House of Commons Chamber made it a rather intimating experience, but I hope my constituents felt I did the constituency justice.
“Now my maiden speech is over, I can get on and start working for the people of Mid Worcestershire – I look forward to what’s ahead.”
